An English settlement was made in the area as early as 1639, though the town was not properly organized and incorporated until 1797. It is named for Jonathan Trumbull, a patriot, merchant, and statesman. Aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky, who lived in Trumbull when he built, designed, and flew fixed-wing aircraft, made it quite famous. He is also responsible for the helicopter being mass-produced for the first time.
The area is well-known for its major waterways, which permit excellent fishing and nature walks. Twenty different major parks totaling over 871 acres are part of Trumbull.
The Bicentennial Fountain is near the corner of Quality Street and Church Hill Road. It features the Trumbull town seal along with a memorial plaque of donors.
