Things To Do in
Shelton, CT
Shelton is a city in Fairfield County, CT, part of the Naugatuck Valley Planning Region. Over 40,000 people live in the area. It was named after Edward N. Shelton, an industrialist who promoted the local dam project.
When the English settled it in 1639, it was originally part of Stratford, CT. It wasn’t until 1789 that the area was split off as Huntington, named for Samuel Huntington. The area had a burgeoning manufacturing village that started in the 1860s, leading to its later growth. In 1915, it became a city, then absorbed the original Huntington to establish the present-day city.
Locally, the Jones Family Farm is one of the best places to go for seasonal crops and wine tasting. Open most of the year, especially Spring, Summer, and Fall, they have been around since 1850 and provide some of the oldest American vintages. The Breadsley’s Cider Mill & Orchard delivers a similar experience, except that it involves apples and cider.
Indian Well State Park is one of the best state parks in Connecticut, offering lots of space for the entire family to enjoy. Swimming, hiking, picnicking, and more abound in the area. But if that is different from your style and fishing is more up your alley, check out Shelton Lakes Recreation Path for a day full of waterway enjoyment!
